Das deutsche "Serendipity Handbuch" OpenSourcePress wurde vor einiger Zeit veröffentlicht, und der Verlag war so nett, die Rechte an den Buchinhalten zurückzuerhalten (auch dank des tatkräftigen Engagements von Dirk Deimeke und natürlich unserer tollen Community).

Das bedeutet, die Inhalte wurden nun unter einer CC-BY-NC-SA Lizenz veröffentlicht und können von der Community (also: EUCH!) frei gelesen, erweitert und möglicherweise auch übersetzt werden. Die meisten Dinge des Handbuchs finden auch heute noch Anwendung, aber es gibt genügend Spielraum für Verbesserungen.

Schaut euch das ganze hier an: Das Serendipity Handbuch. Die Dateien liegen im LaTeX format vor, ihr benötigt daher eine funktionierende LaTeX-Umgebung, um die Dateien kompilieren zu können. Die .tex-Dateien sind jedoch im Klartextformat, also keine fremde Scheu. :-)

Derzeit überlegen wir, in welchem Format das ganze endgültig und sinnvoll für die Benutzer und Mithelfer hinterlegt werden wird. Gerne diskutieren wir hierüber mit euch im Forum.

English version

The german "Serendipity Manual" was published by OpenSourcePress some time ago. They were so kind to revert the publishing license back to our project (thanks to the great work of Dirk Deimeke and kind people like you), so that we can now publish it under a CC-BY-NC-SA license, and let the community (read: YOU!) be able to read the documentation for free, contribute to it, and hopefully even translate it to other languages. Many aspects of the book are still up to date, but surely many improvements can now be made.

Check it out here: The Serendipity Book. The files are written in LaTeX format, so you need a working LaTeX environment to compile it as PDF or other variants, if you like. We are currently working out the best format to use in the future; if you want, you can help us discuss this on the forums.

Nach beinahe einem Jahr harter Arbeit kann nun die umfassende Dokumentation zu Serendipity sowohl online wie auch beim netten Buchhändler um die Ecke bestellt werden:

Serendipity: Individuelle Weblogs
für Einsteiger und Profis
(ISBN 978-3-937514-54-3, Amazon).

Das Buch behandelt auf 750 Seiten sowohl die ersten Schritte mit Serendipity (inklusive Installation und Bedienungsanleitung) als auch die Benutzung von Plugins, Templates und einer sehr ausführlichen API-Dokumentation. Ein gutes Schlagwortregister hilft zudem beim täglichen Nachschlagen.

Ein Probekapitel sowie das vollständige Inhaltsverzeichnis kann unter dem oben angegebenen Link eingesehen werden.

Kurzum, ein Buch dass sich jeder deutschsprachige Serendipity-Enthusiast einmal ansehen sollte. Leser des Buches sind natürlich herzlich eingeladen, ihre Meinung oder konstruktive Kritik zu dem Buch im Serendipity-Forum, mir persönlich oder als Amazon-Rezension mitzuteilen.

Zur Feier der Veröffentlichung gibt es ein Gewinnspiel mit 5 Exemplaren des Buches, die uns vom Verlag Open Source Press zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Um ein solches Exemplar kostenlos zu ergattern, könnt ihr folgendes tun:

A Serendipity Book

It's finally happening - the first book about Serendipity is going to be published by OpenSourcePress: Serendipity - Individuelle Weblogs für Einsteiger und Profis.

As you can gather by the title of the book, it's going to be in german and will be written by yours truly, Garvin Hicking. I will put a huge effort into getting this book translated to english quickly, though.

The book is scheduled for the beginning of 2008 and will cover hopefully every aspect of Serendipity, both for newbies and developers. I'm very excited to be able to write this book and will keep you posted about the progress.

What about a Serendipity bar camp?

Serendipity v1.1 has just been released, v1.2 is on it's way, and we meet almost every day (in the blog, board, wiki) to share our thoughts on new features and adding new tools... but we only do it "virtually". Isn't it about time we have a "real" meeting?

I'd like to get some feedback what you (the s9y community) think about having a s9y camp in the fall (Autumn) of 2007?

s9yCamp would be like a BarCamp (Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcamp). In BarCamps, people meet and give "spontaneous" lectures, workshops, discussions, etc. Isn't that something?

There are a lot of topics the developers, template designers, and users of s9y could share. Exchanging ideas on new plugins, swapping code snippets, customizing themes, thoughts on usability and accessibility ... and along the way meeting the faces connected with board messages and blog entries. The latter might very well be the most interesting part of the meeting.

So, this is just a call for feedback. What do you think about it? Which topic would you be interested in? Would you like to join in?

The feedback determines if and what happens next.

Also important: choosing a place. There is an invitation to meet in Vienna, but other proposals for cities (and organizers) are welcome.

So, please share you thoughts on this. At this point, this is all about approval, things to consider, ideas, questions, etc. - but most of all, this is about finding out whether the community would be interested in an s9y camp at all.

The German lanaguage version of this entry follows: Serendipity 1.1. wurde vor kurzem gelaunched, 1.2 ist in Arbeit und wir machen uns hier (im Blog, im Board, im Wiki) jeden Tag Gedanken über neue Entwicklungen, die Einbindung neuer Tools....und das immer nur virtuell. Wird es nicht Zeit für ein "reales" Treffen?

Wir möchten hiermit euer Feedback einholen was ihr (die S9y Community) von einem S9yCamp im Herbst 2007 haltet? S9yCamp daher, da sich der Name an BarCamps (Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcamp) orientiert. Hier treffen sich Menschen und halten "spontan" Vorträge, Workshops, Diskussionen ab. Wäre das nicht auch etwas für uns.

Es gäbe sicherlich viele Themen die S9y ProgrammiererInnen, Theme-ErstellerInnen, ... und User einbringen könnten. Neue Ideen für Plugins wälzen, ein bisschen Codes austauschen, an Themes feilen, über die Usability und Accessibility von S9y nachdenken und dabei noch die Gesichter und Menschen hinter den Board- und Blogeinträgen kennenlernen (vielleicht ist das auch das Wichtigste an einem solchen Treffen).

Dies ist vorerst ein erster Aufruf zu eurem Feedback. Was haltet ihr von der Idee? Was wären für euch interessante Themen? Könntet ihr euch vorstellen dabei zu sein?

Vom Feedback hängt es ab, wie es dann weitergeht.

Wichtig wäre auch die Frage des Ortes. Es gibt eine Einladung nach Wien, aber andere Vorschläge für Städte (samt OrganisatorInnen) sind herzlich Willkommen.

Also: Schreibt bitte was ihr euch dazu denkt. Vorerst geht es um Zustimmungen, Bedenken, Ideen, Nachfragen, etc. - aber auf alle Fälle um das Sichtbar machen, ob es Interesse an einem S9yCamp gibt.

Garvin's on Holiday (Sept. 20 - Oct. 1)

Temporary Spartacus-Update outage

UPDATE: Spartacus works again

Yesterday, my private linux development box passed away. My small EPIA ME-6000 Mini-ITX PC served me and the serendipity development several gracious coding hours. Even though its 256MB of RAM and the performance of a P2-400 was sometimes driving me insane, it had one big bonus: It was nearly fanless, and thus silent enough to fit into my combined living/work area.

And now it is no more.

Which temporarily means, as long as I get a new silent PC I cannot boot my linux system, which (apart from fetching my mail and beign my file storage) also took care of updating the Spartacus XML files every 24 hours. This means that until then, the new plugin versions are not available via Spartacus, and you must either wait or fetch them via CVS.

Since a new silent PC cuts a larger hole into the budget that I had planned for my turkey-holidays, I can't tell how long I need to gather up that new PC. If anyone here has a small project (2-3 weekends?) in his backhand, that would require a skilled PHP-developer with solid Serendipity-knowledge like myself - please raise your voice. :-)

Does the headline sound catchy enough? Gooood. :-)

Now that I have your attention: Check out the recent FLOSS podcast #12. It's a 1-hour podcast with Rasmus Lerdorf, which is both entertaining and informative.

And he mentions he's using Serendipity - in the last quarter of the podcast. He doesn't actually mention much about our software, but of course highlighting all our strengths would've taken up another hour of the podcast.... ;-)

Anyways - we feel quite humbled to be mentioned by the 'Creator of PHP'. Keep on blogging and have fun!

Serendipity Interview in ITS ART Magazine

Some time ago, the publisher of the ezine called ITS ART Magazin approached me and asked to do an interview with me about programming Serendipity.

Since I generally enjoy this kind of being able to tell about Serendipity, I couldn't refuse this question of course. :-)

Thus, you can now find this interview in the latest issue #05. The interview culminated into a nice conclusion, so everyone who's interested, have a go at it.

I generally suggest you to check out this ezine, its contained images and featured artists alone are a great source of information and inspiration, and the generall layout is a pleasure to look at. Spread the word about this magazine, it's better than most printed editions you can find at you newsstands!

German Magazine "Internet Professionell 4/06" about Serendipity

Thanks to HadleyB from the forums I was notified, that the current issue of the german magazine Internet Professionell had some editorial words from the editor in chief about Serendipity.

Here's a snippet of the original text in german and my translation to english:

Ich wollte ein paar Leuten die Möglichkeit geben, auf einer meiner Websites ihr ganz persönliches Weblog zu schreiben. Zum einen wertet das meine Website mit interessanten Geschichten auf, zum anderen stärkt es die Community zu meiner Site. Die User sollten so weit voneinander getrennt sein, dass sie nur auf ihren eigenen Bereich Zugriff haben, und ich wollte die Blog-Software nur ein einziges Mal auf dem Webserver installieren. Überraschenderweise fand ich zunächst kein Open-Source-PHP-Skript dafür, dass auch sonst komfortabel und leistungsfähig ist.

Insgesamt hat mich Serendipity als Blog-Software reichlich überzeugt, weil es flexibel und sehr einfach anpassbar ist. Und vor allem ist es benutzerfreundlich genug, dass auch weniger erfahrene Blogger damit klarkommen. Probieren Sie's mal aus und schreiben Sie mir, was Sie davon halten.

Multiuser-Blog
"Several individual weblogs, without installing the blog application multiple times: Using Serendipity and some tricks make it happen easily"

I wanted to give some people the opportunity to maintain a personal weblog on my website. On the one hand this adds interesting stories to my website and on the other hand it strengthens the community towards my website. The users should be kept independent from each other, so that they only have access to their specific area, and I wanted the blog application to only have installed once on my webserver. Surprisingly I did not find any Open-Source-PHP-Application that suited my needs and was also comfortable and powerful to use.

I finally found what I needed with Serendipity (www.s9y.org). Using a few tricks, it all works flawlessly and the users have their individual design-templates[...].

All in all, Serendipity has persuaded me in many ways, because it's flexible to use and easy to customize. And most importantly, it is easy to use for even inexperienced bloggers. You should try it and tell me what you think.

German translators needed

My blog, especially the articles about Serendipity, are attracting a very large German audience, 36% of traffic this month, and I would love to have these articles translated into German for those readers. I plan to install the multi-language plugin and any German translations would then be directly available from the post. I'm doing this out of respect for my readers. Would any German speaking person be willing to translate any of my Serendipity articles? I could either create a new author account for you, or you could simply send your translations and I could post them. I will happily credit you with the translation and offer a link to your blog. If my request is well received, I would also happily consider translation into other languages. Thank you, Carl

Serendipity in Space Stations

We got word from a fellow Serendipity user, who told us how happily he is using Serendipity:

I use Serendipity on a lot of my blogs, and I know it is simple to use and reliable as a result of the work you the rest of the project have put in.

I picked it up and used it for the GIOVE-A satellite launch, this is the first satellite of the new European satellite navigation system Galileo which is similar in principle to GPS. The launch was scheduled to take place on Boxing day, 26th December but may be delayed.

It is all exciting stuff, so I reckon there are lots of people like me who use Serendipity and think this would be pretty cool too. I'm using the remote RSS reader sidebar plugin to pull in an RSS feed of press releases, other self-confessed tech-heads may wish to do the same with the blog feed - this doesn't happen every week!

The site will be displaying a live countdown to the launch and provide background on the the Gailileo project, podcasts and links to live video footage. Using the categories sidebar I have provided a variety of feeds for journalists, tech-heads and team members to keep up with events.

Anyway, I'd like to thank Serendipity for making this possible and let's spread the word!
